We just shipped the biggest update to StickPulse since launch — and it changes how you practice drums. Introducing Genre Career Paths: 180 structured lessons across 6 drumming styles, each built with real multi-voice drum grid notation that gets scored in real time.

If you’ve been using StickPulse for timing analysis and rudiment practice, you already know the foundation. Now there’s a whole curriculum on top of it. Let’s break down everything that’s new — and everything that makes StickPulse the most complete drum practice app on iOS.

StickPulse

What Are Genre Career Paths?

Genre Career Paths give you a structured practice roadmap across six distinct drumming styles:

Genre Style BPM Range
Rock Driving backbeats, power fills 100–140
Jazz Swing ride, ghost notes, brushwork 80–160
Funk Syncopated grooves, linear patterns 85–120
Latin Clave-based, cascara, tumbao 90–130
Metal Double bass, blast beats, speed 120–200
Hip-Hop Boom-bap, trap, laid-back pocket 70–110

Each genre contains 30 progressively harder lessons. Pass one to unlock the next. You can pursue multiple genres at once — working on jazz feel in the morning and metal endurance at night — or go deep in one style until you’ve completed the full path.

This isn’t random practice. It’s a curriculum. Every lesson is hand-designed to build technique in the order that actually matters for that genre.

How Every Lesson Works

Each of the 180 lessons follows a four-phase structure that mirrors how professional drummers warm up, work, and recover:

1. Warm-Up (5 minutes) — Free for all users

Sticking fundamentals to get your hands loose and your brain locked in. These are targeted to the genre you’re working on — rock warm-ups emphasize power and consistency, while jazz warm-ups focus on touch and dynamics.

2. Intense Exercise (10 minutes) — Pro

This is the core of each lesson. You play along to multi-voice drum grid notation showing hi-hat, snare, kick, and tom patterns specific to that genre and difficulty level. StickPulse listens through your microphone, scores your timing on every hit, and grades your performance from A through F.

3. Freestyle (5 minutes) — Pro

A click track runs. You play whatever you want. This is where you internalize what you just practiced — experiment with variations, find your own groove within the style, and let the ideas flow without the pressure of a score.

4. Cool-Down (5 minutes) — Pro

Wind down with a simpler pattern. This phase keeps you from stopping cold after an intense workout and helps reinforce the feel of the genre at a relaxed tempo.

The warm-up phase is free for every user on every lesson. Full lessons — exercise, freestyle, and cool-down — require StickPulse Pro.

Real Drum Grid Notation

This is what separates StickPulse from every other drum practice app: you’re playing actual patterns, not just hitting along to a click.

StickPulse exercises use multi-voice drum grid notation — the same format working drummers read in studios and rehearsal rooms. Six drum voices are supported:

  • HH — Hi-Hat
  • SN — Snare
  • KK — Kick
  • HT — Hi-Tom
  • MT — Mid-Tom
  • FT — Floor-Tom

Here’s what a basic rock pattern looks like on the grid:

HH x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x- ← Hi-hat: steady 8th notes
SN ----x-------x--- ← Snare: backbeat on 2 & 4
KK x-------x-x----- ← Kick: downbeat + syncopation

Each voice lights up in its own color on the visual grid display. You see exactly what to play, when to play it, and — crucially — how your timing compares to the grid in real time.

Patterns get progressively harder as you advance through a genre path. Beginners start with basic grooves. By lesson 30, you’re navigating ghost notes, displaced kicks, and tom fill sequences that demand real limb independence.

Real-Time Timing Analysis — Still the Core

Everything in StickPulse is built on the same timing engine that’s been there since day one. Your iPhone microphone picks up every hit. The app analyzes the audio waveform, detects transients, and compares your timing against the grid or metronome with millisecond accuracy.

You get instant color-coded feedback:

  • Green — locked in, right on the beat
  • Orange — slightly early
  • Red — late

After each session, you see detailed stats: consistency percentage, average deviation in milliseconds, total hits, and an overall letter grade. The grading system in genre lessons runs A through F — and trust us, earning an A on a lesson 25 jazz pattern feels genuinely earned.

Apple Watch: Your Wrists Tell the Story

One of the most underrated features in StickPulse is Apple Watch motion analysis. Pair your watch and the app adds a completely new dimension to practice tracking.

The watch’s accelerometer captures data at 100Hz — that’s 100 readings per second — measuring stroke velocity, wrist acceleration, and physical consistency. This is data a microphone simply can’t provide. You can play a perfectly timed hit with terrible form, and StickPulse will know.

Motion events fuse with audio transients for hybrid hit detection. You can see which hits had strong motion signatures (confident, controlled strokes) and which were weak or inconsistent. Over time, you build true physical stroke consistency — not just timing accuracy.

Apple Watch also enables HealthKit workout integration, so your drum practice sessions count toward your daily activity goals. Because yes, drumming is a workout.

Practice Dashboard & Progress Tracking

With 180 lessons across 6 genres, you need a way to see the big picture. The practice dashboard gives you:

  • Practice Streaks — how many days in a row you’ve shown up to the kit
  • Genre Progress — lessons completed and current level in each career path, at a glance
  • Timing Trends — are you getting tighter over time? The graphs don’t lie
  • Milestones — hit 10 sessions, complete 5 lessons, earn your first A grade — tangible markers that keep you motivated

The dashboard is available to both free and Pro users. Everyone should be able to see their progress.

40 Standard Rudiments — Still Here, Still Essential

Genre Career Paths are the headline feature, but the rudiment trainer hasn’t gone anywhere. All 40 standard PAS rudiments are included — single strokes, double strokes, paradiddles, flams, drags, ratamacues, and everything in between.

Each rudiment shows standard music notation with sticking patterns (R/L). Practice at any tempo from 40 to 300 BPM. Get scored on accuracy and consistency after every take. Rudiments are the vocabulary of drumming — genre lessons are where you put that vocabulary into sentences.

Built-In Metronome

StickPulse includes a full-featured metronome with support for 6 time signatures: 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/8, and 7/8. It’s always available — whether you’re in a lesson, practicing rudiments, or just woodshedding with a click.

Recording, Export & Sharing

Every practice session can be recorded and played back. Free users get 3 saved sessions. Pro subscribers get unlimited sessions plus the ability to export:

  • CSV data — every hit with its timing deviation, perfect for deep analysis or sharing with a teacher
  • Audio recordings (.m4a) — your actual playing, captured and exportable

If you’re working with a drum teacher, exporting a CSV of your practice session gives them objective data to work with — not just “it felt good” or “I think I was rushing.”

Who Is StickPulse For?

Short answer: anyone who plays drums and wants to get better. Longer answer:

  • Student drummers who need structured practice with objective feedback instead of “just play along to songs”
  • Professional drummers maintaining their chops and identifying subtle timing tendencies they can’t hear themselves
  • Drum teachers who want to assign specific genre lessons, then review exported session data to track student progress
  • Marching percussionists building consistency under pressure, where every millisecond matters in ensemble playing

The Tech Under the Hood

A few technical details for the curious:

  • Low latency — real-time audio processing with less than 10ms delay
  • On-device processing — all analysis happens on your iPhone. No internet required. Your recordings never leave your device
  • Advanced transient detection — the algorithms distinguish your stick hits from background noise, metronome bleed, and room reflections
  • Works on any surface — practice pads, snare drums, full acoustic kits, electronic drums. StickPulse is optimized for any practice environment
